Interns are a valuable resource to a company

Untitled-175

Last week I attended a training that was organized for Nairobi employers by the Kenya youth empowerment project (KYEP) of Kenya Private Sector Alliance.

The director for KYEP did a presentation that encouraged participants to set up internship programs in their companies or businesses.

This greatly benefits interns and does a lot of good to the employer, as they are likely to increase productivity. To have more hands on-board is beneficial to any business.

The employer is exposed to new and fresh ideas from the interns that he brings on board as injection of new blood gives the company a lifeline. If interns are given chance to experiment and test their ideas, this is likely to increase sales, increase revenue and finding unique and more effective ways of carrying out business activities.

Interns provide low cost labor. Most interns are given an Intern Stipend that is way lower than the conventional employee. Having interns help the employer save on recruitment and training costs. It also helps them get more in the short term and consequently in the long run if they retain some of the best interns.

Giving students within your area of operation an opportunity to gain experience is a simple way of giving back to the society. Most graduates seek to work with brand name companies but this opportunity is no longer easy to get. Giving the students or new graduants a chance to intern in your company helps them start up their working life. This is simple but allows you to be considered as one who gives back to the society by providing this precious chance to the interns.

This in turn helps you build better and stronger bonds with colleges, universities and polytechnics in your area of operation.

There isn’t a simpler way for employers to identify potential hires. Finding performance and result oriented employees is not easy and cheap to come by so take up this chance and set up an internship program for your business or company.
