The East Side business summit held on August 12 2014 at the Nairobi Christian Church in Kayole Estate was full of pomp and color.
Kuza Biashara’s Joan Mbugua, being a darling of youth and women empowerment, was out there with one task in mind – to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs from the slum areas.
In a conference room full of ambitious (potential and upcoming) entrepreneurs, Joan shared real-life stories of people who started small and became successful in life.
What Joan Told the Youth at the East Side Business Summit
Some simple, but important topics that Joan focused on in her key-note address include:
(1)Start thinking beyond third-world mentality
The youth were encouraged to reach out to the rest of the world for ideas and capacity building. They were encouraged to “think globally” instead of limiting their thinking to the slum environment.
(2)How to access mentorship programs
Those in attendance were given some tips on how to pick the right business mentors and study them. Ms. Joan Mbugua was keen to encourage the youth to seek to become job-creators rather than job-seekers.
(3)Unleashing the giant in you
The humble Kuza Biashara Partnerships and Alliances Manager urged the youth to identify the huge potential they possess and to think of commercializing it to change the world.
“Entrepreneurship is a culture that youth can develop for sustainable development and become successful” said Joan while addressing the event which was attended by over 500 youths mainly drawn from Nairobi’s Eastlands region.
The event was organized by Slum Code, which is a group of slum-based entrepreneurs that has been in operation since 2006.
