Joe’s lessons from Fashion and Beauty 101

Untitled-102

When I first planned to attend the hair and beauty meet-up, I wasn’t sure this was the kind of place for a guy like me, who isn’t all that into fashion and accessories. But to my surprise things went even better than I had expected. Maybe this was because of the warm welcome I got at the entrance to Tsavo ball room of the Hilton hotel, by very pretty well dressed ladies.
I then sat myself on one of the seats that was close to a group of men. I did this because the room was so full of so many ladies, so naturally one feels the need to gravitate towards your more familiar species.

Once I was settled in, I started looking around to get a feel of what this thing was all about. From the talk going on, you could easily figure out this event was salon and beauticians related. Speaker by speaker came on stage and talked about hair facts, and pitched solutions they had with their amazing hair products. As the event rolled on, one of the most interesting facts I heard was on the misconception about dandruff. This one especially grabbed my attention, when on stage went an expert from a leading hair products industry in Kenya, who went on and told us about how many people have a condition called flaky skin, which they often confuse with dandruff.

He delved into details why dandruff is not to be confused with a simple dry scalp or flaky skin. This is because skin cells die and a small amount of flaking is normal. This greatly wowed the crowed who were clearly not aware about this fact. He then went on ahead to tell of how a dry scalp should be handled, and his opinion on what sort of hair products should be applied.

After lunch, the networking session started and I got a chance to mingle and talk to some of these professionals in the beauty industry. It was just an amazing experience and at the end of the day, I got to walk away with a Flomar beauty hamper with lots of make-up goodies that I still have no idea what to do with.

I had a great time, and am looking forward to the next hair and beauty meet-up.

Entrepreneurial Pick

Beauty is a really a large industry in Kenya, and is a large employer and huge tax generator for the Govt. of Kenya. It’s not just women, but also a number of men who are into this career and building livelihoods from it. But more importantly, what I learnt is that beauty is not all about make up and looking pretty. It involves taking care of your health, and well-being of your body and soul. A healthy body and mind mean being fit to work well and succeed.
