Lessons from a Matatu driver

Untitled-132

Every Kenyan has been in a ‘Matatu’ or had an experience with one. Kenyan Matatu drivers have a reputation as mindless careless drivers who are a nuisance on the road. However anyone who has ever been in a hurry and hopped into a Matatu has felt that moment of gratitude towards the seemingly reckless maneuvering that gets him or her through the worst of traffic in as little time as possible. Being prepared for learning ahead

Untitled-146

All the world is a laboratory to the enquiring mind. – Martin H. Fischer
One of my duties is to do the final edits on articles that are to be posted to the Kuza Biashara site. In the short span I have been doing this I have gone through over 100 articles. Although it can, at times, get tedious I have found that nearly each article that comes by me has a new lesson. Now by the term ‘lesson’ I mean any aspect that is new to me, be it a word, an idea or an innovation. Continue reading

Thoughts on patience and planning

Untitled-185

Patience

This week I learnt the need for patience and understanding in any work sphere. People have different ways of communicating and expressing themselves and at times they may seem quite hurtful and insulting. One needs to understand the base nature of their workmates and look past it. Also the impulse to retaliate can be particularly strong. Therefore one needs to take time out to get their temper under control. Remove yourself from the immediate vicinity of the aggravator and do whatever it takes to cool down. After which you can rethink the incident with a cool mind. If possible ask someone who is unbiased to think it through with you. Continue reading

A time to bond and build

Untitled-195

As Friday morning dawned I looked forward to our quarterly huddle with eager anticipation. See I’m a territory manager and had a bunch of newbies. From personal experience I know that huddles are one of the most effective ways of integrating our new members. In addition it was an opportunity to meet up with others who due to geographical distance I hadn’t seen in a while. Another reason this huddle was so important is it would be a chance to interact on a more personal level with my team and share our common goal on a more basic level. Continue reading

+Two days of inspiration and bonding

Untitled-196

It was the first time I was to meet the whole kuzabiashara family, and so I was excited but equally nervous. The morning of Friday 24th On arrival, the place was a conference facility of sorts, with a large terrace view of the ever increasing highrise towers in the Westlands business district. More and more people started trickling in and soon it was a full house, with people congregating and catching up! In the kuzabiashara content division, we have our supervising boss known as Ms. Nicole. She is the office chatter-box if I may say so, and naturally the best ice breaker for such a workshop. She led us through a game where we were all to mingle and then cluster in groups of random numbers she would call out. This was so much fun and achieved its purpose of bringing out the smiles and making people familiar with the other, thumbs up to her. Continue reading

Valentines: expectations, disappointments and chocolate

Untitled-197

They call it, the month of Love.

Tuesday the 14th of February, year 2012 and am in the office glued to the computer. It’s Valentines Day and on my way to work florists were everywhere and most women were wearing something red. If it wasn’t an outfit, it was accessories, a handbag or even hair clips. Am wearing old school rubber shoes and a t-shirt… and not paying much attention to this day called Valentines Day. Continue reading
