It is very important to keep yourself in check and to criticize yourself when you do something wrong. However, some people do it very less while others do it a little too much. Both extremes are harmful. Doing it too much is more common among entrepreneurs, probably because they expect a little too much from themselves. However, if you keep criticizing yourself you will be responsible for your own downfall. This is because it’ll hurt your self-confidence terribly and when you aren’t confident you won’t be able to do anything. Worse, you might even slip into depression due to anxiety. Cases of people suffering with eating disorders and harming themselves are also not unheard of. To shield yourself from all this and more, it is advisable that you learn how to criticize yourself and how to keep it within sane limits.
The first thing to keep in mind is to criticize only your behavior. A great number of entrepreneurs make the mistake of criticizing their attributes and their traits. No matter how much you disapprove of your attributes, you can’t change them because they make you who you are. Your behavior, however, is subject to change, and you can work to improve it. Therefore, make it a point only to blame yourself for wrong behavior. If you arrived late at work one day because you stayed up late the previous night doing something that was not important, you can condemn that and make it a point to not repeat it.
The second thing to do is to think what triggered that wrong behavior. Why did you behave as you did? Was it a weakness? Was it a temptation? When you are aware of your weaknesses, you will be able to make your way around them. When you don’t know what’s causing you to behave in a certain way you will simply get carried away. Thus, the key is to understand before reprimanding yourself.
When you follow these two steps your self-criticism will be constructive and you will easily benefit from it.
Criticizing yourself is appreciable but only when you do it properly and constructively. Don’t be too harsh on yourself and hurt yourself in an attempt to make yourself better. Focus on your behavior and the triggers of that behavior to be able to zero in on your weaknesses and to work on them.
