In a start up, everything is about the team. Even if you have fantastic idea, it won’t be of any use if you don’t have the right team to develop and execute it. If you already an entrepreneur and are handling a growing business, this won’t come as surprising news.

Hiring the right people for your business can be the most difficult part of building a company but if you have a clear and good idea of what you want to do with your business, what you want from your team ,

#1. Be clear about your staff requirement

Before you begin the task of choosing your team, ask yourself a few very crucial questions

1.What are the skill sets I need to get the job done?

2. What kind of personality would suit my small business?

3. What kind of people will be able to balance my weaknesses ?

4. What is the salary I will be able to afford to pay?

5. How many employees will I need?

#2. Identify Tasks

If you are running a new business and just beginning as an entrepreneur, and you are not sure where to begin with the process of building your team, here is the first step you can take. Make a list of the various tasks you do in the course of your business on a daily basis.

Now group these tasks together by nature of their similarity. Give each group of tasks a specific name. This will give you a very clear picture as to what tasks you do everyday and from these you can identify the ones you do not really like doing, or those which you do not excel at.

You can consider outsourcing these tasks to employing someone to do them.  As business and tasks grow you can recruit suitable team members.

#3 Give every Job Position a Definition

You may be setting out to hire. You will receive a lot of applications once you advertise a position. Even though the prospective hire seems to be extremely good, if you have defined the wrong position, you will end up hiring people who are not able to add value to your company.

Their skill set which may be extraordinary, however does not match your needs. So it is extremely important to define clearly, the positions that need to be filled, the responsibilities involved, and the right skill set required. This is a step which needs to be taken very seriously.

#4. Don’t assume – Verify what the applicant did at previous jobs

Don’t make assumptions too at the resume. You need to have a really good idea of what the prospective employee actually did in his or her previous jobs. The best way to know how they will perform in the future, is to have a good look at their past.

As a rule of thumb, make sure you look at the foundation, which need to be very strong. Even if the candidate is a fresher, you can train, guide and mentor only if the foundation strong so make no compromises here.

Though many things can be taught in s short time span , foundation cannot be built in days.

#5. Don’t hire blindly- First test their Skills

You are out to hire people who can create and build. Whatever the job, whether a designer , a developer or a marketer it is a must that you put their skills to test.

Test them on something that is relevant to your company, some task they would have to do if they actually join your company. Judge their attitude by watching how they conduct themselves during the interview.

Make sure that they good at communication, because you can’t motivate, delegate or mentor a person who is a poor communicator.

# 6.Trust Your Instincts

Above all, trust your gut instinct. If you are not comfortable with a certain employee or your team, if there is no immediate chemistry, chances are that things may not work out.

If you think something is not right about a potential hire, trust your instinct and move on to the next candidate. Be open in your opinions with every player and pick people who add value instead of conflict to your company.
