2

So, you have bought your dream phone and you’re happy you’ve finally joined the fast-paced IT world. However, a couple of days down the line you realize that you have to “dig deeper” into your pocket in the name of footing heftier internet bills. Well, you are not alone, this is a problem we all have to deal with once in a while. Good news! Kuza Biashara has some simple tips that you can use to manage your mobile data usage. Keep reading.

Buy Mobile Data Bundles in Bulk
Buying data bundles in bulk as opposed to small packages can help you save a lot in the long-run. Instead of buying Ksh5. (20 bob) worth of internet every day, it would be better to buy a bigger package to last you for a longer period. Normally, one gets more bundles (quantity discount) when they buy in bulk as opposed to piecemeal. A monthly-unlimited data package would actually be ideal if you’re an intensive surfer.

Use 2G Network
3G internet is liked by many because of its high speed and seamless connectivity, however, that advantage comes at a price. You tend to spend more when on 3G network than on 2G. If you are finding it expensive to surf under 3G, simply go to your mobile phone settings and select 2G or Edge network.

Of course, you have to keep in mind that 2G is a bit slower than 3G. You may not be able to stream live videos while using 2G network. Click here to learn the differences between 3G and 2G network.

Take Advantage of WiFi
The Kenyan IT sector is growing at an alarming rate. Most organizations, institutions, Matatus and even Counties (e.g Nakuru County) are currently offering free WiFi connectivity. You can take advantage of this window of opportunity to save on your internet cost.

Before you use your mobile phone data bundles, make a point of checking if there is free internet connectivity around you. Be sure to switch off your cellular data while browsing on WiFi.

Stop Apps from Activating in the Background
May be you are using some apps that are consuming your bundles without you even knowing it. Apps that send you instant notifications are a common culprit and you’ll want to have them switched off immediately. Activating them manually would help you save a bit on cost. Don’t know what is an app? Find out more here.

Switch-off Data Roaming Option
Data roaming charges are another huge internet bundle guzzler. As such, you want to ensure that your data roaming option is switched off whenever you don’t need it (actually you don’t need it most of the time). This tip applies to those who travel a lot as well.

Consider Switching Your Internet Service Provider
If the first 5 tips don’t seem to help, then it’s high time you change your internet service provider. Chances are that you are being overcharged. Locally we have some companies that offer up to 100 mbs for just 20 bob per day.

Now, compare this with another provider who offers less than 40mbs for every 20 bob you spend…The writing is clear on the wall. You can save much more by switching from provider A to B or vice versa. Alternatively, you can buy a dual-SIM phone so you use the cheaper provider and still keep your old telephone contacts.

There are many ways to save on internet bundle usage. The 6 tips we’ve shared with you above are just but the tip of the iceberg. Do you have some more ideas and tips that you would like to share with us? Feel free to leave a comment on the comment box below.
