Can You Trust References During your Hiring Process?

Most employers check work history and references to judge a candidate and to see whether he can be interviewed further for the particular job posting. It sadly turns out that references are not all that trustworthy anymore.

Recently, it came to light that the Internet is being used for more malpractices than you previously thought possible. Today apparently, you can easily get a fake reference in exchange of money. It gets even worse – you can even purchase fake job history! Organizations that do this go to the extent of providing the candidates with fake businesses that even appear on Google Maps. You will also find that the number provided actually works! A human will answer and will be more than ready to give you references about the particular job candidates. This serves as a brutal eye opener, doesn’t it?

It is time for the human resources department to dig deeper, thus. If you relied a lot upon references, it is time to change that and think about other aspects of understanding whether the candidate is suitable and eligible to work for you. Simply checking references and cutting the hiring process short because it is tedious can cost you and your business a lot. We all know how one bad candidate can ruin the entire culture of the workplace and send the business downhill. Are you willing to take the risk now that you know that you can easily be tricked in the one aspect that you actually thought was most trustworthy?

Of course, don’t reject references altogether. Experts advise that you shouldn’t stop at references and employ a person. You should take a step further and test the candidate to know whether he or she is actually as capable as the references and the job history suggest. You can do this in two ways.

First Way: Project

Test the applicant by assigning a small task or a project along with the job application. This will show the ability of the person and you’ll know whether the references were real or whether you were being fooled.

Second Way: Research

Find out whether the company mentioned in the applicant’s CV actually exists. As aforementioned, you might find it on Google Maps but if the company doesn’t really exist you won’t find it anywhere else. States usually have databases that you can go through. Take advantage of that! The organization(s) that offer fake references and job histories usually don’t have the nerve to imitate a company that already exists. This will work in your favor.

It is very easy to get cheated today and that is why you should be very careful at every step. Don’t take any procedure or task lightly.

References and work history are given a lot of importance during the hiring process. In fact some companies make decisions solely based on this information. If you do the same, you should stop it because recent revelations show that it is very easy to fake references. Make your hiring process more stringent and don’t depend totally on references and job history.
