Taking a Break – An Actual Break – Without Interruptions

We all need a holiday, at least a short one. But, how many of us actually manage to enjoy one?

While it is a known fact that distractions can ruin your work, work ruining holidays is even more common. You go on a trip with your family or friends and you’d like to stay away from work. However, at the back of your mind you have the fear of work piling up and bombarding your email. Before you even realize it you open your email and start replying. What happens? You spend more than half your holiday working!

Thankfully, there are ways of tackling this problem and ensuring that your break is an actual break and not your way of remote working. Experts say that trusting someone else to take care of work while you are away is the simplest way of ensuring that you don’t get disturbed or distracted. You could either choose your co-founder to help you when you are gone or you could also choose someone from your team. You should choose someone you can easily trust. Also, make it a rule that nobody except this particular person should contact you. This person may call you only if there is a real need, emergency, or a situation that only you can solve. At all other times you simply should not be disturbed or bothered with work stuff.

Talk to this person before you leave and be clear on contact – the circumstances, the reason, the time, the emergency situation. This is important because what may be an emergency for him may not be an emergency for you or for the business. Therefore, alignment is vital under such contexts. You can tighten things even further by establishing how you can be contacted. Make it a rule to be contacted only via phone and no other means. This will definitely stop you from wanting to check your email day in and day out because you now know that you won’t be sent any important emails.

If you don’t have a co-founder and have an assistant, you can have your assistant do this for you as well. No matter whom you give this role to, you can always be thankful and then return the favor when he or she wants to take a leave. This system is supportive, helpful, and very friendly. It will help you bond and trust each other even more, creating a strong team within your company.

Entrepreneurial Learning

Taking a break comes difficult for startup founders. Even when you do end up taking a break, you keep thinking about work and checking email all the time. To have a stress-free holiday, it is advisable that you choose someone to fill in your shoes whilst you are gone. Make sure this person is trustworthy.
