Sitting on the boss’ chair is no small thing. It may be absolutely delightful to take up the responsibility of an entire enterprise but, of course, there are things you must do as the leader to ensure that the environment in your workplace is positive.
Sure you are putting in efforts to be a good boss but now it is time to escalate to the next level. You need to be a better boss so that your employees enjoy working for you. Oh, don’t worry! This is no rocket science. In fact you can be a better boss in merely three steps.
Did an employee perform exceptionally well today? Say thank you! These simple words can work magic for you. Go old school, pick out a paper, and write down thanks. Make sure you are specific. If she answered calls for you when you were away and took care of things, write down that you are thankful for exactly that. Make it a point to send out three cards everyday.
Ask encouraging questions so that your people know that you actually care. Questions such as “Are you comfortable working for us?,” “Have we done something that has had a negative impact on you?,” and so on can be very helpful.
Nobody takes everything seriously. Why should you? There is no need to have a frown across your forehead round the clock. It is absolutely okay to smile and be happy. It is absolutely okay to lighten up and share a laugh or two. Lighten up this week and see how your employees appreciate it. Potluck lunch is a good idea. Try it!
Getting better is not so hard, is it?
Being a better boss will help your employees be better employees. It is your duty to lighten up the atmosphere and let your employees know that you care for them and appreciate their hard work. Be thankful. Be caring. Be fun.
