When all is well, leadership is a breeze. Trouble in leadership comes when, well, troubled times come.
So, how do you lead successfully through mess? How do you manage challenging situations? You can’t run in the opposite direction, of course. You have to face the challenge with a strong spine. Your idea may be unpopular but you have to voice it.
Here is what experts have to say to startup leaders:
Don’t Try Doing it Alone
Challenging times are tougher when you tread the path alone. Startup leaders are advised to turn to mentors or advisors when things get tough. Experts will give you advice, suggestions, and ideas to overcome the problem. Two or three minds at work will help you heaps. Become a member of groups such as Entrepreneurs’ Organization so that you always have support.
Of course it is very difficult to be confident when you are in the middle of mess but it is important to be confident and to work with focus. If you fail to do that you will crumple under the stress. Believe in your decisions. Your beliefs should always be positive.
Think about the Big Picture
When the going gets tough you should focus on the long-term goals and work accordingly. your long-term goals, for example, may require you to make cuts in the budget. Do so without letting your customers feel the pinch. Be smart.
Don’t just keep talking. Your entire team is feeling the stress and as the leader you should make sure you listen to everyone. Once you listen to everyone you will be able to make a decision accordingly. Take the ideas and suggestions, think about it, and decide. You are the leader. It is your job to decide.
Don’t Give Up
Remember even through the most difficult times that nothing is impossible. The path may be tough but it is not impossible. It is a path after all and you CAN tread it. Also, be focused on your task instead of letting your thoughts stray to how very difficult things are. Work accordingly and there is no reason why you won’t succeed.
A firm hand in times to trial will pull you through.
Tough times test leadership. Make sure you are confident and decisive during such times. Listen to your team, take suggestions from experts, and act immediately! Don’t ever let yourself believe that something is not possible.
