Are You a Misguided Boss? – It can Destroy Your Business

You are the new boss and you are feeling great. Right on top of the world and everybody else seems like mere mortals below. If this is your first experience as a boss, there are a few flaws if business leadership you should keep in mind before these mistakes ruin your business. To prevent you from sabotaging your own company, here are tips that can save your company from an untimely end.

You don’t’ have a vision

If you want to be a good leader, having some sort of a vision for your company’s future is a must. How will you lead your team forward if you don’t have goals and aims to begin with. You will not be able to motivate your employees or inspire them and this non performance scenario will affect both your team and your brand. As a part of leadership and business skills, have goals, tell your team about them and steer your team in the right direction.

You are not able to communicate

To be a good leader you should be a great communicator too. You won’t go far in your business if you are not able to be on your team’s wave length. You have to articulate and get to know whats going on with team members as well as in the business. As a prerequisite for business leadership you have to learn to communicate across many platforms and environments. Ask, inquire, advice, motivate, – these are leadership communication traits that you will need to develop and fast !

You tend to Boss

Employees will never give their best performance if you try to intimidate them. If you bully, threaten to fire them at the slightest pretext or unsatisfactory performance, or criticize their work or personal traits without due consideration, you can be sure to have no employees before long. Instead, teach your employees the right way of doing things, tell them calmly yet firmly what is expected. Most times this will work.

Are You being a Control Freak?

Being a new boss will mean a new sense of authority. Not every one knows the right way how to handle the power of business leadership. You may be inclined to micromanage and involve yourself in every small detail of your employee’s job. This not only makes them give up responsibility for their job but also makes them feel unduly pressurized. As a good team leader, your right action would be to empower your team not scrutinize and subjugate.

You have Zero tolerance and Feel You Know it all

To err is human, but you are not being asked to forgive and forget a mistake. Its only about showing tolerance for small mistakes, and not firing the employee. A second chance is always advised and great leaders are ones who teach and train their team members how to be really good and learn from their failures. Moreover, no one likes a leader who thinks he or she knows it all and brags. In business leadership, some modesty is called for and if you do really know a lot, share it with your team. Your company will benefit.

Walking round the office isn’t management

This technique belongs to the yesteryear and so if you do have to walk around your office, do so to talk to your employees, engage them in conversation, share ideas with team members and make them feel you are part of the team. Stalking them with an eagle eye will only ruffle their feathers.

Entrepreneurial Learning

Being the leader is as difficult as it is exciting. You have to maintain a balance of power, communicate well, have a vision and goal and deal with tolerance to inspire employees to perform better. Don’t intimidate or micromanage. Get rid of your bossy attitude and empower employees to perform and grow your business. That is true business leadership.
