Stay Away from these Marketing Blunders- They Spell Disaster

There is a story every business owner has to tell, about the lessons they learned on their journey to success. The greatest revelations and lessons have come from the times when they have made gross errors or mistakes in their business marketing strategies. Since these mistakes have to do with marketing, they become expensive ones as well. So, before setting out on your marketing blitz, its is best to learn whatever you can to prevent them from happening to you.

Don’t focus on yourself – Focus on Customer Needs

You have a great company, we agree, and you offer top of the line products and services. But when you go out to find your niche in the market, it is the customers you should be focusing on. What can your products and services do for your customers? You need to take yourself out of the marketing and place your customers at the center of it. It ‘s your customer, not your company who is the hero here.

Don’t make Assumptions

It would be a mighty mess if you make assumptions about your customer’s preferences, which are based on your own likes and dislikes. Your marketing and business strategies could be exactly at cross purposes with what your customer really prefers or needs. It could be discordant and totally out of touch. Do some research and find out what your target audience really wants.

You know nothing about your buyers

If you haven’t invested time and money to identify who your prospective customers are, your business marketing strategies will be as effective as a damp squib. You need to be informed about your target audience, their lifestyle, their behavior, what influences their purchasing decisions, which sites do they visit, where do they socialize, knowing their persona, or having a full picture of your buyer will help you make a big impression in the right direction.

You are starting off without Customer Data

This piece of advice is worth repeating twice, you are nowhere if you are not familiar with your customer profile. The importance of research cannot be overlooked and it beats your gut feel and instincts at becoming the foundation of your marketing program. Be creative by all means but have your ear to the ground. Customer data is like a wand in your hand and can open up new windows of opportunity and provide inspirational insights which could be crucial elements in your business marketing strategies.

You are waiting for the breakthrough

If you are looking for a bright flash of light to miraculously guide you, then you will be waiting forever. The leading light you are looking for may not and need not come from your specific industry. It is often imitation that leads to product innovation. So a good idea which has worked well outside your line of business, can be applied with success as an analogy. Take something that worked very well somewhere and see if it fits your model. Effective marketing tactics in one industry work just as well in other industries too, with tweak here and a push there.

You remain silent-On Social media

In today’s marketing milieu, there is no bigger mistake than to maintain a silence or absence on social networks and online platforms. When a customer reaches out to you and asks a question on social media, is your response immediate? Customers online expect real time responses and if you are not prepared to answer, within at the most 24 hrs, you can consider the customer as good as lost.

Entrepreneurial Learning

Marketing is a must if you need to get your product or service noticed by the customer. However, there are mistakes which should be avoided to achieve at least a fraction of what you aim for. Keeping in mind that you need to know the target customer, focus on what you can do for the customer and keeping in touch through social media, will make your business marketing strategies simpler and more successful.
