Oprah Winfrey – she stepped into the driver’s seat and drove herself to fame and success
Oprah Winfrey had an extremely tough childhood and youth. She was born to a teenage mother amidst poverty and hardship. She was sexually abused and she got pregnant when she was a teen. She lived in rural Mississippi against odds.
Today, she is a star among millions! At the age of 32, she turned her life around and had her own TV show. It has been 25 years since and she is an inspiration to millions around the world. She has her own business now and her net worth is approximately $2.9 billion.
Jeff Bezos – he personified work ethic and value
He is the Founder and CEO of Amazon today but life was quite tough for him. He lived modestly as a child, helping his grandfather in various chores. Through his teens he worked at McDonald’s. Bezos graduated from the prestigious Princeton college but he saw success much later when he founded Amazon. He took the risk of leaving his hedge fund job to launch his venture in 1994. We all know where he stands now.
Howard Schultz – he worked straight from the heart
The Starbucks CEO was the first one in his family to actually attend college! In order to pay for college, he bartended and took out loans. He also sold blood! He worked in various companies as a marketer until he was hired at Starbucks. It was a little coffee shop back then. When he expressed his desire to start an espresso bar, his superiors rejected. What did he do? He started his own rival company, building a brand of his own, and very soon, bought Starbucks. What he transformed this “little coffee shop” into is for all of us to see and admire.
His net worth is estimated around $2.2 billion at present.
Jan Koum – the story of the successful American dream
Hailing from Ukraine, he lived modestly in California with his mother and grandma. They were able to live through the odds thanks to a support group. He worked at a grocery store and his mother babysat. When he was free, he started learning computer networking on his own and his interested grew. He then started studying programming at the San Jose State University. He worked to pay for studies. In 2009, Brian Acton (his partner) and he, together launched WhatsApp, which Facebook bought for $19 billion this year.
WhatsApp is a part and parcel of all our lives today, isn’t it?
If you take a look at all these successful entrepreneurs, you will see that there is something common among them besides their business planning and their means of running a business: they are all spirited and they didn’t let that spirit fade even through the harshest moments.
More than anything, it is the entrepreneurial spirit and relentlessness that will take you to the top. We all face hardships but only those who take them in stride and continue to work hard succeed.
