Being the boss doesn’t give you the license to say whatever you like.
Successful entrepreneurs will never be caught saying a few things and this is where the reason behind their success becomes obvious. You may have the best seat and the highest position to your name but small business management does not give you the authority to say these things. Here they are:
I am the boss. Follow what I tell you without questions.
When you are running a business, communication is the key. You should be open enough to employees to reach you and probably even question something you ask. By saying that you are the boss and that they should follow you blindly, hence, is wrong. You won’t earn respect like this. You will earn unhappy employees who will never have the opportunity to innovate. Ultimately, they’ll walk out on you.
You are lucky I employed you (or you are lucky you have a job)
Sometimes an employee may not live up to your expectations or may not do as you said. That doesn’t mean you try reminding him/her that he/she is indebted to you. Again, proper communication is the key. Successful entrepreneurs always seat their employees down and talk to them politely about the situation. If they are able to improve based on your suggestions, your problem is solved. If not, you should let the employee(s) go.
You are the only one with a problem.
We all have our bad days. Your employee is probably having his/hers. A disagreement once in a while is not so bad that you should reprimand them. Saying something along these lines will cause further problems.
If you don’t do it (or like it), I’ll find someone else.
Productivity is highly hampered when a gun is held against the head. Cut your employees some slack and be kind. Don’t threaten them into doing a good job for you.
Hopefully, you haven’t said any of these phrases and never will.
Successful entrepreneurs treat their employees with respect and understanding. That is how they earn respect in return. Some phrases may seem authoritative but are simply dominating and harsh. You should avoid using them.
