In a company, teamwork is of utmost importance. Everybody in your workplace has to work as a team or a set of teams to see projects through. You simply can’t rely on individuals to do things. However, some teams just don’t work. Building a successful team is actually not so easy. You have to ensure there is chemistry so that there is no fighting, bad-mouthing, etc. Every team member must be willing to work hard together. If that is not there, the team will not be productive at all.
Thankfully, there are ways to build great teams without relying solely on luck. There are a few strategies that you could adopt while building a team for a particular project so that everybody is happy and the projects are successful.
Social Skills are Very Important
Generally, when you have the task of building a team you surely think of the smartest people in your workplace based on the project at hand. A group of smart people is not necessarily a great team. A group is intelligent and productive only when there is social integrity. The group has to be able to communicate without ego problems. Thus, when you build a team you should also think about the social skills a person has.
Don’t build a monotonous team with only men or only women. Remember that women are generally more social than men. A study actually proved that teams that had a fair share of women actually performed better than all-male teams. However, that doesn’t mean you include only women and exclude all men! Men bring in more confidence to the team. A team with both men and women is what you should aim at.
Everybody in the team should know at least a little about each other and a little about what they have come together for. Mental models or mental exercises can bring the team closer and make them one happy and productive unit. Only when you understand each other will you be able to gel with them. Understanding comes at the mental level.
Build a productive team for a great result.
Building a great team needs some thinking. As the leader it is your job to understand that only when you build a great team can you expect great results. Include men and women in the team and prioritize social skills just as you would intelligence so that the team gels together and performs well.
