You should always speak the truth but that statement contradicts the whole, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”
To think about it, the latter is an excellent rule for life and relationships, but you really can’t apply it in business. You have to speak the truth no matter how bitter it is. Truth is generally bitter and that is why many people don’t want to say it or hear it. If you construct a business on lies, it will crumple disastrously. Having said that you shouldn’t just keep babbling truth all the time in a bitter and harsh manner. There is a certain way to do it and there are certain rules that you should follow.
Keep it Simple
Say it straight and say it simply. I mean that you shouldn’t just say half of it and swallow the remaining. Say everything clearly. Fact is not something that you choose. Fact remains regardless of what you think about it and regardless of whether you like it.
Don’t Postpone It
If the truth is ugly, it will remain ugly. Time will not change it. In fact, time can only make it worse. It won’t improve it. Thus, you should never wait or postpone it. If you have to deliver bad news you have to do it immediately.
Spread the News
Make sure everyone involved hears it. Don’t assume that some people already know. Even if they do you should tell them anyway so that the truth has some meaning and also so that everyone involved knows.
ALWAYS Speak the Truth
Truth telling is not something you do once and then forget about. Speaking the truth is a continuous process. It is an everyday thing. Truth should come to you from all directions, speaking to you about what’s working, what is helping you, what has backfired, why the figures have gone down, and so on. Truth will help you progress. Therefore you should always bask in truth. Always.
Always be surrounded by truth and you will grow effectively.
Speaking the truth may not come easy but that is not a reason to hide it, say half of it, or to neglect it. Likewise, hearing the truth may not be easy but that is no reason to hide from it and to close all your doors to it. Only when you have it in you to face the truth can you work with it and ultimately grow.
