Leadership is a fruitful, motivating, and fulfilling position but as a leader there are things that you have to do. In life, you can get away with a few things and simply ignore the other things but as a leader, you have to ensure you don’t ignore certain things. These things are important because they define your role as the leader.
Only when you are able to learn a few things will you be able to lead by example and ace the competition. Many leaders have ignored these and have failed as a result. Avoid treading the same path by identifying them and ensuring that you learn them.
Nothing teaches you things better than experience. The best lessons in life are learnt the hard way. Learn from experiences. Don’t just forget what you went through. You make mistakes and learn. That is life. Treasure your experience and learn from it.
Know your Priorities
You have numerous jobs and duties as a leader. You should recognize the most important duties and ensure you do them properly. Also, you should learn to trust and delegate work. Of course you can’t delegate anything and of course you can’t do everything yourself. You should take time out and focus on the priorities. Delegate things that you can and have them done, too.
You might snort in derision and say that it is imperative to be smart as a leader but you’ll be surprised at how many people actually take this lightly. They really take things for granted and look for shortcuts. In the beginning you may act only smartly but chances are high that you will lose focus and fall prey to nonsense. Hence, you should always keep in mind to NOT get lazy and to always be smart.
Regardless of how stringent your hiring process was you will surely have a few employees that are gems and a few employees that are just hurting your business. Filter them out first. Promote those in the first category. Encourage them and let them know that you appreciate their presence.
Fire those in the second category. You can’t afford to keep up with them.
Don’t Give Up
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. Keep this mantra in mind. You will see highs and lows in business. The lows may seem ridiculously low but that is no reason for you to give up. Giving up is for losers. Things will balance out soon. Be brave. Courage is a trait of a great leader.
These things will help you be identified as a great leader.
Great leaders are not really born. They are made. There are certain traits that you can learn to be identified as a great leader. These include smart action, delegation, prioritizing, being relentless, and encouraging your star employees.
