I am talking about innovation in relation to control here because if you refuse to give up control, you will stymie the flow of new ideas. When you do that, there will be no innovation. Now read the first line again. The minute you get predictable, you are over.
Thus, you should not make the same mistake as the many other start up owners who refuse to relinquish control when the time calls for it. Here are three pointers that will help you identify the time when it comes:
Are you extremely rigid about your business model? Of course you started off with a plan and a structure but what if the plan was actually wrong? If yes, you should give up control.
Sticking with the initial plan thinking that it is the best is wrong. Instead, you should use it as a foundation and you should innovate. You should work towards polishing that idea and coming up with better ideas. Let the creative juices flow, please.
Your company will come to a standstill if you repel change. This is more or less like rigidity but this is from the product point of view. You should know what is in the market and what has a market in the first place. You should be open to steering into a new direction when the need arrives. Your products and offerings should be in the best interest of the market and not in your own best interest.
There are many who dismiss things even before thinking about them just because they are not open to ‘new’ things. I mean, seriously! If you are so hasty and so NOT open to listening, why did you even start a business? A business is all about innovating and coming up with NEW ideas. If you reject ideas without even bothering to analyze them, you should give up control and let someone else take charge.
The more you try to control, the worse it will be for your company.
Being a control freak will not do you any good. If you want to be a successful leader you should be flexible and analytical. You should be open to fresh ideas and use them to innovate so that you strengthen your business.
