What you Don’t Need to be to be a Great Leader

LeadershipIn order to be a great leader, you don’t need to be everything. Many entrepreneurs want to possess a number of qualities that they think are important. Au contraire, what they think is necessary is generally not that necessary at all. Thus, you should get your thoughts straight and understand what’s required and what’s not.

If you understand what is expected of you as a leader and what’s not, you will be able to transform into a great leader by yourself without much effort. Let’s see what these imagined ‘needs’ are:

Affection

We all like being loved. We all like being adored. As leaders, we will get that attention. However, it is not necessary that you keep getting it. You shouldn’t forget your role as a leader in all that affection and attention. Also, you shouldn’t get so used to all this attention that you simply can’t do without it.

It is not a compulsion to be liked and adored. There will be times when people won’t like what you are saying. But as long as you know you are right, you don’t have to worry. If you reach a point where you start craving for attention and focus upon getting attention you are in trouble. You won’t be able to focus on work at all.

So please understand that it is okay to not get all the attention in the world.

Smartness

Leaders have great responsibilities. They have to be in different places at once, quite literally. They have to mentor and guide, and they have to LEAD.

However, this may or may not work sometimes. All these qualities can’t be portrayed at the same time. Some of you may have some of these while the rest of you may have other traits. Whatever it may be, you should accept the fact that you are not the smartest. There are many people smarter than you are and you should be ready to work with them and share ideas.

If you are really the smartest person around then you have surrounded yourself with the wrong people.

Being There

Since you are the leader you have the lenience to get away from meetings as and when you want to. Don’t take advantage of that.

You are the leader and your presence is needed. When I say presence, I mean all of it – your intellect, your physical presence, and your emotional presence. You will always be needed in some place or the other. Find that place and go there.

Now that you know what you don’t need to do/be, you can amend your thought process accordingly.

Entrepreneurial Learning

Leaders think they always need to be liked and that they need to be the smartest. That is not true. Sometimes you are not liked and sometimes you are not the smartest. There is nothing wrong with that. These are not necessities. You should accept the inflow of ideas and be open to change. You should accept that people won’t like you sometimes and that you are definitely not the best.
