Combining Imperfection to Gain Perfection

No single person is perfect but when you know how to combine a team of imperfect people, you will have the perfect team. As the boss, if you want to drive profitability your way, you have to know how to use your employees to your advantage. Remember at all times that each of your employees has one key attribute at least and it is up to you to use that.

Of course this can seem daunting in the beginning but if you go through with it, you will have a highly profitable team at your service! Here are tips to form the perfect team:

What Attribute are you Looking for?

This is the first question you must ask yourself. The stereotype may suggest an all-round employee but get away from it. Now is the time for you to focus on one key attribute that you definitely want your employees to have.

What is it that you want all your employees to possess? Attitude? Teamwork? The right attribute will depend on the type of business you own and what you are targetting. Thus, this is a decision you should make on your own.

What Attribute are you NOT Looking for?

Along with filtering employees using the desired attribute, you should filter them using the undesired attribute.

What is the one thing that you absolutely can’t stand in your team members? Bad work ethics? Ego? At some point of time you may have said something along the lines of, “He may be the best but he has/is . . . . That is why I don’t want him here.”

What is that thing that causes you to lose your mind completely? Think about it.

What’s your Threshold?

You might not be able to build your team with the most important attribute. What do you do then? You determine how many team members you can have with that attribute. For example, if you want to form a team of six members, may be you could do with four people have the key aspect you are looking for. You can choose the remaining two based on other skills such as leadership. In that way, your team will be balanced.

You can poke your threshold here. But don’t go over the top and be too lenient. If you do, you won’t be able to form the perfect team and there won’t be any balance.

Your final step is to form the team. When you know what you want, what you don’t want, and what your threshold is, you can put all these requirements together and easily form your perfect team.

Make sure, as mentioned in the last point, that you actually balance your team well. If you compromise on your key attribute, make sure it is well worth it.

These are the four steps to follow in order to build perfection using imperfections.

Entrepreneurial Learning

With only four steps you will be able to form the perfect team. You don’t need to look for all-rounders today. You need to look for those who possess what you want and don’t possess what you don’t want. At the same time, you should learn how to balance your team. The team formed will be so powerful that you will definitely drive profitability in your way.
