Many people actually think that they know and accept their values. Ask me and I’ll tell you that you don’t. Unless you have written them down clearly and have tested them, you can’t say that you even have core values to begin with. So what are the values that you must possess as an entrepreneur?
Lying is weed – unwanted and addictive. You lie once and you will lie ten more times to hide that one lie. Soon lying will become a habit and you will lie at every turn. Such lies might seem very helpful in the beginning but one day they will come back to bring you down severely.
Be honest and direct. Also, encourage your employees to do the same. Let them know that you appreciate honesty as opposed to happy lies.
You have to be very consistent at every turn. If you have delivered well once, you have to ensure that you keep doing the same. Don’t be a hypocrite.
Live up to the expectations people have of you.
Create an Impact
You will find potential everywhere you look. But that does not mean that you do everything. You should not ask yourself whether you could do something. You can ask yourself whether doing that something is important.
It is all about creating the most impact by putting in the least effort. Strategic thinking will help you accomplish that.
In today’s world of competition, you have to be creative. Ingenuity is a must if you want to excel. Whether you are a writer or a marketer, you need your creative neurons to work for you so that the result is compelling and intriguing.
These are just a few of the most important ones. Your core values will differ from someone else’s.
In order to test your core values, you need a pen and a paper. Here are some questions that you should think about the following:
- Your greatest accomplishments,
- When you felt the greatest success in terms of efficiency,
- What your most common and general rules are,
- Your greatest failures, and
- When you felt failures in terms of efficiency.
Once you are clear about all these, write a few sentences of self-advice based on the results of the above-mentioned factors. After that, make the sentences precise and form words. For example, if your advice to self is to not indulge too much in food or anything else, you should put all of that into a single word: moderation.
Lastly, put it to use! Test it! Why is this important? Testing will help you find out situations in which your core value could have a negative impact on you! For example, while innovation is a good thing, sometimes change is not welcome. If you find no such negative situation for your core value, it is a good one!
All this may require thought and time but once you go through with it, you will realize how much it will help you. Do it with a friend for better results.
Not having values and not recognizing your values are both dangerous for your welfare. Thus, you should know what you should possess and what you already possess. Conduct a small test for yourself to find out about it.
