What is a hackathon?
A hackathon by definition is a group of software apps builders in a room, who form a team, pick a project and then develop and design it until the deadline arrives. They then can show off what they have come up with, and make money off the project.
This Is an event is invite only and registration will close on the 14th of June 2012. The Nokia Hack will be held at the 88MPH, Human IPO start up garage, Piedmont Plaza, on the 4th floor. It starts on the 23rd of June and ends on the 24th of June.
Certificates of participation will be issued and the winning apps will have trophies. Prizes are as follows
Top Prize: Kshs. 1 million
Second Prize: Kshs. 300,000
Third Prize: Kshs. 100,000
Consolation prizes: 10 apps will get Kshs. 10,000 each
“The key to developing a great app is simplicity, you strip away, and strip away again – and a ticking clock is great for generating that kind of focus.” -Kenneth Oyolla, Nokia’s General Manager east Africa.
The Hackathon contributes to the 300,000 concepts submitted to the Nokia Ideas Project into economically viable mobile apps for use on the latest and upcoming Nokia phones. This year the teams will submit working apps for use on three platforms which are Nokia with Windows Phone, Qt, and Series 40. The best will then be developed as products for the Nokia Store.
