The removal of 16 percent VAT on mobile phone handsets in June has come as a boon for both subscribers as well as software developers in Kenya.
Smart phone handsets have registered a 200 percent increase in sales while mobile penetration has increased from 50 percent to 70 percent.
A number of software developers are joining the bandwagon to provide value-added services in all sectors, to the burgeoning mobile subscribers. The increasing number of smart phone users has also meant an increase in the number of software developers that are well on their way to put Kenya as a mobile application software leader in the African market.
Ideos, Samsung & Nokia lead the market in smart phone sales and their models are cost-effective for low income earners too. Thanks to multiple platforms on which these mobiles run, application developers are not just proliferating but also designing applications that can run across platforms.
